The International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) have announced a deepened collaboration aimed at promoting and developing para-football globally. With a shared vision of inclusivity and accessibility in sports, both organizations are working to ensure that blind and partially sighted athletes have the opportunity to participate and excel in football.
In a recent meeting between IBSA Executive Director Rufat Hajili and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, the two organizations discussed new avenues for cooperation. UEFA reiterated its commitment to supporting IBSA’s initiatives and fostering opportunities for blind and partially sighted athletes. This collaboration extends to working alongside other para-football federations and the Para Football Foundation, reinforcing their joint efforts to expand the reach and development of para-football on a global scale.
A key milestone in this partnership is the First Para Football World Games, which is set to take place in March 2026 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This event is expected to be a pivotal platform for the further growth of para-football, showcasing the talents of athletes from around the world.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin also visited Kazakhstan in April 2025, where he met with government leaders and national football federation representatives to promote football and para-football. During his visit, IBSA’s Rufat Hajili participated in discussions that emphasized the importance of maintaining strong partnerships with global organizations to continue the progress made in the para-football sector.
The new collaboration builds on previous initiatives, such as the IBSA Blind Football Development Project Europe, where UEFA supported blind football training sessions in Kazakhstan in 2018. These efforts, alongside the ongoing work of UEFA and IBSA, aim to create more opportunities for blind and partially sighted athletes and ensure the sustainable growth of para-football worldwide.
Both UEFA and IBSA are committed to inclusivity, equal opportunities, and the sustainable development of para-football. Their work together is helping to bring the sport to more athletes and fans, fostering an international community dedicated to creating a more inclusive football experience for all.
