Two brothers from North Pole High School, AJ and Patrick Melvin, have achieved major milestones in 2024.
AJ, a long snapper, and Patrick, a running back, earned first- and second-team all-state Division 11 honors.
The brothers share a close bond on and off the field. For AJ, playing long snapper came naturally. This year marks his second time being named to Alaska’s all-state team.
“Last year I got number two for long snapper, and then this year number one,” AJ said. “It felt pretty amazing.”
Patrick’s success took more time. In 2024, he rushed for 892 yards, improving by 500 yards compared to his 2023 season. Patrick said everything started to click during their season opener against Lathrop.
“They’re a tough opponent,” Patrick said. “I had to flip the script and just try to be better than them.”
The brothers are proud of their Filipino heritage, and their mother, Cherry, has been their biggest supporter. Born and raised in the Philippines, Cherry’s lively personality made a lasting impact on her sons.
“The loudness in the house whenever they’re on the phone with her family, cooking, or being mad at us and just not knowing what she’s like saying to us,” AJ said with a laugh.
Representing their culture means a lot to both brothers.
“I bless it with all my heart. It’s why I love my mom … and just carry that legacy on,” Patrick said.
“My senior year, with my back plate,” AJ added, “I put the Filipino American flag on my back plate to represent.”
AJ is set to graduate this summer after finishing his senior football season. Patrick will return in August for his final year. The brothers also plan to visit the Philippines later this year.
