Novak Djokovic has officially withdrawn from this year’s Italian Open, which is set to take place from May 7 to 18. The decision comes as the 24-time Grand Slam champion continues to struggle with form in 2025.
Djokovic’s announcement follows a surprising loss to world No. 44 Matteo Arnaldi in the second round of the Madrid Open just three days ago. That defeat marked his third consecutive loss, including setbacks against Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open final and Alejandro Tabilo in the first round of the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Despite his recent struggles, Djokovic has an impressive history in Rome. He has won six titles and reached 12 finals at the Italian Open — tying Rafael Nadal for the most final appearances. He has played in the tournament every year since 2007.
His absence from Rome raises questions as the French Open draws near. Roland Garros begins in less than a month, and Djokovic’s form and fitness remain under scrutiny.
So far this year, the 37-year-old Serbian has only made deep runs at the Australian Open and Miami Open, reaching the semifinals in both. He was forced to retire due to injury in Melbourne, adding to the challenges of his 2025 season.
