Wellington Phoenix head of football operations Jake Piper will leave the club at the end of the current A-League Men’s season to explore new opportunities overseas.
Piper has held the role for the past two and a half seasons, managing the day-to-day operations of the men’s team and the wider football department. He joined the Phoenix at the start of 2023 and has been a key figure behind the scenes.
Before his time with the club, Piper spent nearly a decade working in football. His previous roles included positions at Capital Football, Oceania Football Confederation, and New Zealand Football.
In a statement, Piper said it was an emotional decision to leave his hometown club.
“The Phoenix has always been a big part of my life,” he said. “It’s been an incredible experience and I’m extremely grateful. But the time feels right to move on and take the next step in my career abroad.”
Piper said he’s proud of the progress made within the football department during his tenure.
“The club has a strong foundation and a clear purpose. I believe I’m leaving it in a better place. I’ve had some amazing moments and worked with fantastic people. Now I’m looking forward to being a fan again.”
He also thanked key figures at the club, including general manager David Dome, director of football Shaun Gill, and head coach Giancarlo Italiano.
Shaun Gill praised Piper’s dedication and impact.
“Pipes has been a valuable member of our team,” Gill said. “He’s hardworking, respected across the football community, and admired by both staff and players. I was reluctant to accept his resignation, but I understand his desire to grow his career overseas.”
Gill added, “Hopefully this is a ‘see you later’ rather than a goodbye. There will always be a place for him at the Phoenix.”
The club is currently looking for Piper’s replacement and expects to make an appointment in the coming months.
