UEFA Football Board Pushes for VAR Consistency and Player Rest

UEFA’s Football Board has reiterated calls for more consistency in VAR decision-making, while also spotlighting growing concerns over player workload and injuries.

The annual meeting, held at UEFA headquarters in Nyon on Monday, brought together former players and coaches to discuss key issues in the modern game — including offside interpretations, handball rulings, “double-touch” penalties, and the enforcement of the eight-second goalkeeper rule.

Chaired by Portuguese great Luís Figo, the board also emphasized the need for structured rest periods for players after long seasons to reduce injury risk and ensure better preparation for future campaigns.

“We’re grateful for the Football Board’s ongoing contributions,” Figo said. “Their insights will help shape a better, fairer, and more compelling game for everyone involved.”

The board’s previous recommendation for increased respect towards referees led to the current rule allowing only captains to address match officials — a directive now part of the official laws of the game.

“Football isn’t perfect, so dialogue is essential,” said UEFA Board member Michael Laudrup. “When players, coaches, and referees communicate, it moves the game forward.”

By fostering collaboration between stakeholders and addressing the sport’s evolving challenges, UEFA hopes to improve fairness, safety, and the overall experience on and off the pitch.
