India’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the Sudirman Cup 2025 ended on Tuesday after a 4-1 loss to Indonesia at the Xiamen Fenghuang Gymnasium in China. This marks the team’s second consecutive defeat in Group D following a similar 4-1 loss to Denmark.
With both Denmark and Indonesia securing two wins each, India can no longer qualify for the knockout stage, even if they beat England in their final group match on Thursday. Only the top two teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals.
India had a bright start when Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto won the mixed doubles opener against Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja. After dropping the first game, the Indian pair rallied to win 10-21, 21-18, 21-19, overcoming a 16-19 deficit in the final game with five straight points.
However, the lead didn’t last long. In the second match, PV Sindhu, currently ranked 18th in women’s singles, lost in straight games to world No. 11 Putri Kusuma Wardani, 21-12, 21-13, in just 38 minutes.
In the men’s singles, world No. 30 HS Prannoy gave India a glimmer of hope by taking the first game 21-19 against world No. 6 Jonatan Christie. But the Indonesian bounced back to win the next two games 21-14, 21-12 to secure the point.
Indonesia sealed the tie in the fourth match, with Shruti Mishra and Priya Konjengbam suffering a one-sided 21-10, 21-9 defeat in women’s doubles.
The final match, a dead rubber, saw Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi go down 22-20, 21-18 to world No. 10 duo Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Daniel Marthin.
India now turns to its final group match against England, seeking a consolation win before exiting the tournament.
