The Fitzroy Tigers futsal club has taken a major step forward in promoting women’s participation, earning a 1-Star Club Changer accreditation thanks to its strong leadership and commitment to inclusion.
The club, which launched a dedicated women’s training initiative, is actively building both junior and senior women’s teams. Fitzroy Tigers President Jimmy Soufis called the recognition a “significant moment” in the club’s journey.
“This is a big moment for our club and our members as we continue to strengthen our programs and processes,” Soufis said. “We hope this is just the beginning – and that more clubs will follow our lead, achieve their 1-Star accreditation, and invest in the future of the game.”
Founded in 2006, the Fitzroy Tigers are nearing their 20th season with a renewed focus on creating inclusive opportunities. While their long-term goal is to achieve 50/50 gender participation, the club is currently focused on growing its base by forming more junior girls teams.
In 2024, the club expanded its Junior Girls Program, held regular training sessions for senior women, and promoted the women’s game through social media. A key challenge has been access to venues, but support from local partners such as Brunswick Secondary College – which now hosts the senior women’s sessions – has helped make these programs possible.
Soufis also encouraged other clubs to begin their own Club Changer journey by connecting with Football Victoria’s Growth and Development team.
Fitzroy Tigers’ success shows what’s possible when clubs commit to inclusive development. Their achievement stands as a powerful example for futsal clubs across Victoria and beyond.
