China reaffirmed its supremacy in world badminton by clinching a record-extending 14th Sudirman Cup title on Sunday, defeating South Korea 3–1 in the final at Xiamen’s Fenghuang Gymnasium.
Playing on home soil, the hosts set the tone early in the mixed team event, with Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping earning a hard-fought win in mixed doubles over Korea’s Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung, 21–16, 17–21, 21–15.
South Korea struck back through women’s singles, where world No. 1 An Se-young continued her remarkable form, defeating Wang Zhiyi 21–18, 21–17 to level the tie.
But China quickly reasserted dominance. Shi Yuqi delivered a flawless performance in men’s singles, dismantling Jeon Hyeok-jin 21–5, 21–5 in a match that lasted just 34 minutes. The decisive blow came in women’s doubles, as Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning wrapped up the tie with a 21–14, 21–17 victory.
The win marked China’s fourth consecutive Sudirman Cup triumph (2019, 2021, 2023, 2025) and 14th overall out of 18 editions. Remarkably, China has appeared in every final since the competition’s inception in 1989, falling short of the title only four times.
South Korea, the second-most decorated nation in the tournament’s history, continues to trail with four titles, claimed in 1991, 1993, 2003, and 2017. Despite the loss, the Koreans showed impressive consistency and depth throughout the weeklong tournament.
Elsewhere, Malaysia’s campaign ended in the quarter-finals, falling 3–0 to eventual champions China.
The 2025 Sudirman Cup took place from April 27 to May 4, drawing top talent from across the badminton world to Xiamen for one of the sport’s premier international team competitions.
