UNC Women’s Tennis to Face NC State in NCAA Super Regional Showdown

The University of North Carolina women’s tennis team will host in-state rival NC State on Friday in the NCAA Super Regional, with a berth in the national quarterfinals on the line. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.

Fifth-seeded UNC and 12th-seeded NC State will meet for the third time this season in what promises to be another tightly contested battle. The Tar Heels defeated the Wolfpack 4-3 during the regular season and followed up with a 4-1 win in the ACC Championship semifinals three weeks ago in Cary, N.C.

Friday’s match is part of the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. The winner will advance to face either No. 4 Ohio State or No. 13 LSU in the NCAA quarterfinals, scheduled for Thursday, May 15, in Waco, Texas. Ohio State and LSU are set to play Friday at 4 p.m. in Columbus.

This is Carolina’s 15th consecutive NCAA Super Regional appearance and the 17th under head coach Brian Kalbas. Overall, the program is making its 19th appearance in the round of 16. The Tar Heels are aiming for their 13th trip to the NCAA Elite Eight, all of which have come since 2002.

UNC enters the match riding a 10-match win streak, including three victories that secured the program’s second straight ACC title.
