Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday, defeating rising Filipina player Alexandra Eala 6–0, 6–1 in the first round of the 2025 Italian Open.
The match marked the first-ever meeting between the 22-year-old Kostyuk and the 19-year-old Eala.
Eala has been enjoying a strong 2025 season. She made headlines in March with surprise wins over top-10 players Madison Keys and Iga Świątek on her way to the Miami Open semi-finals. Her recent success has earned her international recognition — even in Rome.
“I didn’t expect such a big Filipino population here in Rome,” Eala told Tennis.com. “Even just walking the streets, I’ve run into Filipinos five times already. When we walk in the streets, you know when you’re seeing another Filipino!”
She added, “It’s such a blessing to have such a big community. So many places feel like home because of that.”
However, Rome didn’t feel like home on Wednesday. Eala struggled on the clay surface of the Grand Stand Arena at Foro Italico. The match ended in just 62 minutes.
Kostyuk now advances to the second round, where she’ll face world No. 15 Daria Kasatkina of Australia. Kasatkina holds a 4–2 advantage in their previous matches.
Eala’s tournament isn’t over yet. She will return to the court later this week to compete in doubles, partnering with American star Coco Gauff.
