The FIU Panthers couldn’t complete a late rally Wednesday night, falling 10–6 to the Miami Hurricanes in their final midweek contest of the season at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
Miami (30–18) jumped out to a fast start with back-to-back home runs in the first inning, then stretched its lead to 3–0 with a triple in the third.
FIU (26–23) answered in the fourth. Freshman Adonys Velez got the Panthers on the board with an RBI groundout that scored Javier Crespo. Cole Cleveland followed with a well-placed infield single to second, trimming the deficit to 3–2.
The Hurricanes responded with a three-run fourth and added another in the sixth to extend their lead to 7–2.
FIU rallied in the seventh, sparked by a 109 mph solo homer to right from Cleveland. Later in the frame, Crespo drove in two more with a double to the left-center gap, pulling the Panthers within two.
Brylan West’s RBI single in the eighth made it a one-run game, but Miami countered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to put it away.
On the mound, Ryan Reyerson made his second consecutive midweek start, allowing two runs in one inning. Julian Mlodzinski followed with two innings of one-run ball and two strikeouts. Bryce Greene and Tristan Dietrich combined to allow four runs, while Bryce Turner impressed with 1.2 hitless innings in relief. Jaydon Bishop and Logan Runde also saw action.
Offensively, FIU tallied 13 hits, led by four-hit performances from Cleveland and Crespo. Andrew Ildefonso and West added two hits apiece. Kishon Frett extended his on-base streak to 32 games, and Marc Hersh chipped in with a single.
