North Dakota State University men’s basketball has added senior transfer Tay Smith to its 2025 recruiting class, head coach David Richman announced on Wednesday.
Smith, a 6-foot-3 guard from Bowling Green, Kentucky, brings four years of college experience to the Bison program. He began his career with two seasons at NAIA Brescia University in Kentucky, then spent the past two seasons playing at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina.
“Tay will bring a great work ethic and lead by example,” said Richman. “He’s got a strong track record of success, knows what it takes to win, and plays with good instincts. We’re excited to add him to our Bison Family.”
During his time at Brescia from 2021 to 2023, Smith averaged 16.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. At Lenoir-Rhyne from 2023 to 2025, he posted averages of 11.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game. In 2025, he helped lead Lenoir-Rhyne to a 29-6 record and a trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. He was also named to the All-SAC Tournament Team.
Across four college seasons, Smith has scored 1,572 points (13.9 points per game), grabbed 575 rebounds, and made 227 three-pointers.
