The University of North Alabama women’s tennis team saw its historic 2025 season come to an end on Thursday afternoon in Rome, Georgia. The Lions were defeated 4-0 by No. 48 UNC Charlotte in the UTR WNIT Tournament Semifinal.
North Alabama finishes the season with an 18-6 record, the most wins in a single season since the program moved to Division I. It marks the team’s best overall performance since 1988, when the Lions won 21 matches.
After defeating Middle Tennessee 4-2 in the quarterfinals, UNA faced UNC Charlotte for the first time in program history. The Lions aimed to claim their second win over a ranked opponent, but the 49ers quickly took control by securing the doubles point and then sweeping three singles matches.
In doubles play, Charlotte’s Prisca Abbas and Lucia Aranda defeated Senem Ocal and Mathilde Delaney 6-1 on court three. The 49ers clinched the doubles point on court two, as Ni Xi and Shona Nakano beat Anoek Pruijmboom and Ada Karabacak 6-2.
In singles, Abbas gave Charlotte its second point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ocal on court five. Aranda followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Delaney on court four. Nakano sealed the match on court six, defeating Pruijmboom 7-5, 6-3.
Charlotte advances to the WNIT Finals and will face No. 57 Washington State on Friday, May 9 at noon.
