“We are thrilled to welcome Matt as our new head men’s basketball coach,” said Director of Athletics Erin Quinn, a 1986 Middlebury graduate. “He brings deep experience from his time in the NESCAC as both a player and assistant coach, and has shown success as a Division III head coach. We were impressed by his ability to develop student-athletes both on and off the court.”

Goldsmith recorded over 150 wins during his time at TCNJ. He led the Lions to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) titles in 2020 and 2024. His teams reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2020 and finished both the 2020 and 2024 seasons with a 20-9 record.

“I want to thank Erin and the search committee for trusting me with this opportunity,” said Goldsmith. “It’s an honor to lead such a historic program filled with top student-athletes and passionate alumni. I will work hard to continue the tradition that Coach Jeff Brown built over the past 28 seasons. My family and I are excited to become part of the Middlebury community.”

Before coaching at TCNJ, Goldsmith spent four seasons as an assistant at Amherst College, his alma mater. While there, Amherst won NESCAC titles in 2013 and 2014 and captured the NCAA Championship in 2013. Goldsmith has also coached professionally with the Nerd Team since 2020 and volunteered with USA Basketball for two summers.

A 2008 Amherst graduate, Goldsmith was a four-year starter and helped lead the team to the 2007 NCAA title and a 2008 national runner-up finish. The team also won NESCAC championships in 2005 and 2006. He played one season professionally in Germany with TV Werne 03.

Goldsmith will officially begin on May 27. Longtime head coach Jeff Brown will retire on June 30.
