No. 14 Coastal Carolina was down 6-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning on Thursday night at Springs Brooks Stadium. But the Chants (39-11, 21-4 SBC) turned things around with an impressive seven-run rally to defeat ULM 8-6 in a Sun Belt Conference showdown.
The comeback was sparked by Blake Barthol, who hit a two-run homer and then delivered a go-ahead two-run single later in the inning. Barthol finished the night with four RBIs, leading Coastal to a dramatic win. The Chants sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh, scoring all seven runs off four different ULM pitchers.
ULM had built a 6-1 lead, including three runs in the first and three more in the fifth. Coastal’s Domenico Tozzi got the Chants on the board with a solo homer in the fifth before the big rally in the seventh.
Barthol finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Wells Sykes and Caden Bodine also contributed RBIs in the decisive seventh inning.
Hayden Johnson (4-0) earned the win, throwing two scoreless innings in relief. Dominick Carbone sealed the victory with a perfect ninth inning, striking out the side for his fifth save. The pair combined to hold ULM (21-28, 7-18 SBC) to just two baserunners in the final two innings.
