Ayush Shetty defeated fellow Indian badminton player Kidambi Srikanth to secure a spot in the men’s singles quarter-finals at the Taipei Open 2025 on Thursday.
Shetty, currently ranked 44th in the world, won the match 21-16, 15-21, 21-17 in just over an hour. This victory marked Shetty’s second win over Srikanth this year, having also beaten the former world No. 1 at the Indonesia Masters in January.
Srikanth led 15-14 in the first game before Shetty went on a six-point streak to take control. The second game was tightly contested, with Srikanth pulling ahead at the end to equalize the match. However, Shetty dominated the decider, leveling at 14-all before taking the win.
Meanwhile, Unnati Hooda kept India’s challenge alive in the women’s singles, easily defeating local player Lin Sih-Yun 21-12, 21-7 in just 27 minutes. Hooda, ranked 53rd in the world, will face Taiwan’s Hung Yi-Ting in the quarter-finals.
In contrast, Tharun Mannepalli’s run in the men’s singles ended after a 21-13, 21-9 loss to Indonesia’s Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah in the second round. Mannepalli, ranked 56th, was unable to overcome Ubaidillah, who is ranked 67th.
