Some of Italy’s top tennis stars faced off in a high-energy doubles match Sunday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome. Lorenzo Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego battled back to defeat brothers Jacopo and Matteo Berrettini 6-7(0), 6-2, 10-8 in a dramatic first-round encounter.
Musetti, ranked in the Top 10 in singles, and Sonego, ranked No. 44, lost the first-set tie-break without winning a point. However, they quickly bounced back by taking the second set and then outlasted the Berrettini brothers in a tight match tie-break.
Despite letting a 5/1 lead slip in the decider, Musetti and Sonego stayed focused and won the last four points to seal the win. They also saved nine of the ten break points they faced during the one-hour, 42-minute match, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
In the second round, the Italian duo will meet the No. 2 seeds Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten. The British pair advanced by beating Flavio Cobolli and Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-3 for their first win in Rome as a team.
Other seeded pairs also had a strong showing on Sunday. Second seeds Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz breezed past Sebastian Baez and Alexandre Muller 6-1, 6-2. Fourth seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, who recently won in Madrid, also advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Yuki Bhambri and Robert Galloway.
