The 2025 NIT Tennis Championship brought together top Division I men’s and women’s teams who did not qualify for the NCAA Tennis Tournament. After three days of intense matches, Washington State (women) and UT Chattanooga (men) emerged as champions.
This event, now in its third year, featured eight men’s and eight women’s teams. All matches took place at the Rome Tennis Center in Georgia, giving these programs a chance to compete for a postseason title.
In the men’s final, UT Chattanooga faced Saint Mary’s College of California. It was the first-ever meeting between these two schools. Chattanooga started strong by dominating the doubles matches, winning 6-1 on court No. 1 and 6-2 on court No. 2. This gave them the crucial doubles point.
Saint Mary’s responded well in singles. Carlos Ramos won 6-4, 7-6 at No. 1 singles, and Francisco Duran secured a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. However, Chattanooga’s players stepped up under pressure. Ryan Mudre (No. 3), Kristof Kincses (No. 5), and Cortland Grove (No. 4) each won their singles matches, sealing the championship for the Mocs.
With this victory, Chattanooga closed their season by winning five of their last six matches. They now join Liberty (2023) and Tulsa (2024) as past NIT Tennis Championship winners.
In the women’s final, Washington State faced UNC Charlotte in a battle between east coast and west coast programs. Washington State, the top seed, dominated the doubles matches. They won 6-2 at both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts, securing the first point of the match.
In singles play, Washington State continued their strong performance. Eva Alvarez Sande (No. 1), Hania Abouelsaad (No. 4), and Chisato Kanemaki (No. 5) each earned victories, clinching the championship for the Cougars.
This win marked Washington State’s second 20-win season in program history, matching their record from 2018. They now join TCU (2023) and Tulsa (2024) as NIT Tennis Championship winners.
