The Cheyenne Mountain girls tennis team has returned to the top after finishing as runners-up last season. On Tuesday, the Red-Tailed Hawks defeated defending champion Kent Denver 4-2 at Denver Tennis Park, winning their third team title in the last four years.
In a rematch of last year’s state final, No. 2-seeded Cheyenne Mountain upset top-seeded Kent Denver to reclaim the crown.
“It’s just incredible,” said Alyssa Sadri, Cheyenne Mountain’s No. 1 singles player. “We won my freshman year, came second last year, and now we’re back on top. Being seeded second and beating the top seed feels amazing.”
Sadri delivered the decisive victory, securing the championship with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Kent Denver’s Lila Moldenhauer. Moldenhauer had recently claimed her third-straight individual state title just days earlier.
“Coming into this match, I thought I had no chance,” Sadri admitted. “Lila’s an incredible player, already committed to a great college. I’m just a junior. Honestly, we didn’t count my match as one we could win. But getting a set off her at individual state gave me confidence.”
Sadri’s two-set comeback was the turning point. “Winning today, with my team and supporters around me, made me feel so loved and cared for,” she added.
Cheyenne Mountain also claimed victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches. Rose Katen defeated Victoria Strobos 6-0, 6-3, while Sophie Zhou beat Ellie Strobos 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, the Red-Tailed Hawks’ No. 1 pair, Saffron Heroldt and Mary Curry, secured a hard-fought 7-6, 6-2 win over Annie Goldmanis and Nora Rapp. The No. 2 doubles match was still in progress when Sadri clinched the overall victory.
Kent Denver earned points in the No. 3 and No. 4 doubles. Samantha Brenner and Sofia Pina defeated Cheyenne Mountain’s Grace Namnoum and Erica Levielle 6-2, 6-0. Hallie Silverman and Margaux Lively won 6-1, 6-0 over Lauren Sharp and Charlotte Wellens.
Cheyenne Mountain now holds 26 girls tennis team state titles, ranking second all-time. Kent Denver remains third with six team titles.
