North Carolina’s first football game under head coach Bill Belichick is officially scheduled. The Tar Heels will host TCU on Monday, Sept. 1, at 8 p.m. inside Kenan Stadium, marking the first Monday night regular-season game in the history of the program.
This game will also be the fourth meeting between the Tar Heels and the Horned Frogs. The teams previously played in 1940, 1994, and 1997.
TCU, led by head coach Sonny Dykes, is entering its fourth season under his leadership. The Horned Frogs made a memorable run to the 2022 College Football Playoff and advanced to the National Championship Game after defeating Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal.
The last time the Tar Heels played on a Monday was in the 2011 Independence Bowl against Missouri, which was played on Monday, Dec. 26. North Carolina has participated in four bowl games on Mondays: the 2011 Independence Bowl, the 2001 Peach Bowl, the 1981 Gator Bowl, and the 1977 Liberty Bowl.
This game will also mark Carolina’s first non-Saturday season opener at home since Monday, Sept. 21, 1941, making it only the fourth such opening game in Tar Heels history. Previous non-Saturday season openers were on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1902, and Friday, Oct. 12, 1894.
