Head coach Penny Hardaway and the University of Memphis men’s basketball program have officially announced the signing of forward Mason Matthews for the 2025-26 season.
Matthews, a 6-foot-8 forward from Maumelle, Arkansas, comes to Memphis after a diverse and successful college career. He has previously played at Tyler Junior College, Southwest Tennessee Community College, Clark Atlanta University, and Lane College.
Matthews began his college career in the 2020-21 season at Tyler Junior College, later transferring to Southwest Tennessee, where he played for two seasons (2021-23) with the Saluqis. Over 59 games and 50 starts, Matthews averaged 8.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 1.2 assists in 25.1 minutes per game. His standout year came in the 2022-23 season, where he averaged 12.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, shooting 47.6% from the field, 41.0% from three-point range, and 82.2% from the free-throw line.
Matthews briefly played at Clark Atlanta University in the 2023-24 season, appearing in only two games, before transferring to Lane College for the 2024-25 season. At Lane, he played in 21 games, starting 14, and averaged 11.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. Matthews maintained his strong shooting efficiency, hitting 50.6% from the field and 43.6% from three-point range. He had several impressive performances, including a 24-point, six 3-pointer game against LeMoyne-Owen and scored 20+ points six times.
Matthews is the 11th player signed by Hardaway for the 2025 recruiting class, joining Daniel Vieira-Tuck, Felipe Patino, Quante Berry (Temple), Dug McDaniel (Kansas State), Aaron Bradshaw (Ohio State), Julius Thedford (Western Kentucky), Ashton Hardaway (Saint Mary’s), Zachary Davis (South Carolina), Sincere Parker (McNeese State), and Hasan Abdul Hakim (UTRGV).
