Jacobo Ramon scored a dramatic goal deep into stoppage time as Real Madrid came from behind to defeat Mallorca 2-1. The win delayed Barcelona’s chance to celebrate their 28th LaLiga title.
Madrid needed this victory to keep Barcelona from securing the championship without playing another match. Despite the win, Barcelona still lead the standings by four points. They can clinch the title with a victory over Espanyol on Thursday.
Mallorca took an early lead in the 11th minute when Martin Valjent found the net. The visitors held on to their advantage until Kylian Mbappe equalized in the 68th minute. Mbappe dribbled past two defenders before scoring.
In stoppage time, Ramon delivered the decisive blow. His goal from inside the box, five minutes into injury time, secured the win and postponed Barcelona’s title party.
Mbappe continues to chase the league’s top scorer title. He entered Wednesday’s match with 27 goals, two more than Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski. Mbappe recently scored a hat-trick in Madrid’s 4-3 loss to Barcelona on Sunday.
That defeat had almost confirmed Barcelona’s title win. The Catalan club beat Madrid in the last “Clasico” of the season, completing a clean sweep of all four matches against their rivals this campaign. Barcelona outscored Madrid 16-7 across those games. This was the first time Barcelona won every “Clasico” in a season with at least three encounters.
Meanwhile, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti faced a mixed reception at the Santiago Bernabéu. His recent appointment as Brazil’s new head coach has sparked criticism. Some fans were unhappy that he negotiated the job while Madrid’s LaLiga campaign was still ongoing.
However, there were no loud boos or cheers when Ancelotti’s name was announced before the match. Most fans clapped and joined the stadium announcer in saying his name, following the Bernabéu tradition.
