Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has praised Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian’s £20 million investment in the club, calling it a “game-changing endorsement” for women’s football.
Ohanian, who is married to tennis icon Serena Williams, has purchased an 8-10% stake in Chelsea’s women’s team. He aims to transform the club into the “next global women’s sports brand.”
The tech entrepreneur and Williams are set to attend Sunday’s FA Cup final at Wembley, where Chelsea could complete a domestic Treble.
Bompastor believes Ohanian’s backing will elevate the team further. She said the investment serves as “extra motivation” for players and staff ahead of their clash with Manchester United.
“This is a game-changing moment—not just for Chelsea, but for women’s football and young girls everywhere,” Bompastor stated.
“It proves we’re on the right path, but we still want to improve. We aim to be one of the world’s best teams, both on and off the pitch. When young girls see us, we want them to dream of playing for Chelsea one day.”
Ohanian has a strong track record in women’s sports. He was the largest shareholder in Angel City FC before its £192.3 million sale in 2024. He also founded Athlos, a women-only athletics event.
