CSUN’s men’s volleyball program continues to make an impact on the international stage, as former Matador standouts Kyle Hobus and Daniel Wetter were named to USA Volleyball’s 30-player preliminary roster for the 2025 Volleyball Nations League (VNL).
CSUN is one of just seven collegiate programs with multiple alumni on the squad, highlighting the Matadors’ growing influence in elite volleyball.
Hobus & Wetter: A Legacy of Excellence
-
Kyle Hobus (2020-24) – The 2024 AVCA All-American capped his CSUN career with a program-record 406 kills as a senior, becoming just the 15th Matador to reach 1,000 career kills. A three-time First-Team All-Big West selection, Hobus also set personal bests in aces (46), blocks (83), and assists (28) last season.
-
Daniel Wetter (2019-22) – A two-time AVCA All-American, Wetter ranks tied for first in CSUN history with a .457 career hitting percentage. His .528 hitting percentage in 2020 led the nation and set a program record.
Road to the 2025 VNL
The U.S. Men’s National Team, led by head coach Karch Kiraly, will trim the roster to 14 players for each leg of the tournament:
-
June 11-15 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
-
June 25-29 (Hoffman Estates, Illinois)
-
July 16-20 (Chiba, Japan)
The top eight teams advance to the VNL Finals (July 30-Aug. 3, Ningbo, China)—a critical step toward the 2025 World Championships.
A Mix of Experience & New Talent
The roster blends Olympic veterans (including Paris 2024 competitors Erik Shoji, Jeff Jendryk, and Micah Ma’a) with rising stars like Hobus, one of eight players yet to debut for the senior national team.
“We’re excited about this group’s depth and hunger,” said Kiraly. “This VNL season will set the tone for our next chapter.”
The No. 3-ranked U.S. squad has claimed four VNL medals, including three silvers (2019, 2022, 2023).
