Inter Milan’s hopes of winning the Serie A title suffered a major setback after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Lazio at San Siro. A last-minute penalty by Pedro denied Inter the win and left them one point behind league leaders Napoli with just one game left in the season.
Napoli, who drew 0-0 with Parma, failed to take full advantage. But Inter also missed a golden chance to go top. Defender Yann Bisseck opened the scoring for Inter late in the first half but gave away the penalty in the 90th minute that allowed Pedro to equalize.
Lazio first leveled in the 72nd minute with Pedro’s first goal. Denzel Dumfries restored Inter’s lead with just 11 minutes remaining, only for Bisseck’s costly mistake to hand Lazio a late lifeline.
Marko Arnautovic had a chance to steal the win for Inter in stoppage time. He missed a close-range shot, then scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Inter now have 78 points and will face Como away on the final day. Napoli, with 79 points, host Cagliari. If both teams finish with the same points, a playoff will decide the champion.
Napoli had several chances to beat Parma, including a dramatic moment in stoppage time. David Neres was fouled in the box by Mathias Fjørtoft Løvik, and the referee initially awarded a penalty. But after a long VAR review, the decision was overturned.
In other Serie A action, Juventus tightened their grip on fourth place with a 2-0 win over Udinese. Goals from Nicolás González and Dusan Vlahovic helped them reach 67 points. Roma are just one point behind after beating AC Milan 3-1. Lazio are another point back following their draw with Inter.
The Roma-Milan match was also a farewell to Claudio Ranieri, who managed his final game at the Stadio Olimpico. The club and fans paid tribute to the veteran coach.
Roma started strong, with Gianluca Mancini scoring early. Milan went down to 10 men after Santiago Giménez elbowed Mancini and received a red card. João Félix equalized for Milan before halftime, but Roma responded in the second half. Leandro Paredes scored from a free-kick in the 58th minute, and Bryan Cristante sealed the win with a long-range strike late in the game.
In the Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven retained their Eredivisie title after a tense 3-1 win at Sparta Rotterdam. Goals from Luuk de Jong and Malik Tillman in the second half sealed the victory and the championship.
Ivan Perisic had given PSV the lead in the first half, but Sparta’s Gjivai Zechiël equalized early in the second. At that point, Ajax briefly moved to the top of the table with a 2-0 win over FC Twente. But De Jong restored PSV’s lead and Tillman’s goal in the 84th minute confirmed their seventh straight win and league title.
PSV ended the season with 79 points, one more than Ajax. Their manager, Peter Bosz, became the oldest coach to win the Dutch league at 61 years and 178 days.
Ajax had led the league by nine points earlier in the season but faltered down the stretch, picking up just two points from their previous four games before the final day.
Feyenoord secured third place and a spot in the Champions League qualifiers, despite losing 2-0 to Heerenveen.
In Spain, Villarreal shocked newly-crowned La Liga champions Barcelona with a 3-2 win. Barça had hoped to celebrate the title with a win in front of home fans but were left disappointed.
Ayoze Pérez gave Villarreal an early lead, but Lamine Yamal and Fermín López turned the game around for Barcelona before halftime. Villarreal came back strong after the break. Santi Comesaña equalized, and Tajon Buchanan scored the winner in the 80th minute. The win earned Villarreal a Champions League place.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid beat Sevilla 2-0 with late goals from Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. Sevilla finished with nine men after Loïc Badé and Isaac Romero were both sent off.
Atlético Madrid secured third place in La Liga with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Real Betis. Julián Álvarez scored twice as Diego Simeone’s team locked in their top-three finish.
