Napoli and Inter Milan will both be without their head coaches on the sidelines for next week’s decisive Serie A title matches. Antonio Conte and Simone Inzaghi were sent off during Sunday’s dramatic Round 37, and will now serve suspensions.
Inter and Napoli are locked in a tight race for the Scudetto, with just one point separating the teams ahead of the final round. But both teams will have to face their crucial games without their managers present on the touchline.
Napoli manager Antonio Conte was shown a red card during his team’s goalless draw against Parma. According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Conte got into a heated argument with Parma players on the bench at the Stadio Tardini. Parma coach Christian Chivu was also sent off during the same incident.
After the match, Conte expressed his frustration:
“It irritates me, because you work all year to have a decisive match,” he said.
“I trust the staff and these lads, I above all trust the crowd at the Stadio Maradona. I was annoyed by Parma’s obstruction today. I’m used to English football, where there aren’t all these delays—injuries, cramp, players pretending. That irritated me, and that’s why I was sent off.”
A similar scene played out at San Siro, where Inter coach Simone Inzaghi was dismissed late in the 2-2 draw with Lazio. The incident occurred in the 88th minute after Lazio coach Marco Baroni appealed for a VAR check on a possible handball by Inter defender Yann Bisseck.
The referee reviewed the play, awarded Lazio a penalty, and showed Inzaghi a red card for his reaction. Pedro converted the penalty, denying Inter a crucial win.
Next week, Napoli will host Cagliari at the Stadio Maradona, while Inter travel to face Como. The league is expected to announce the official date and time for both fixtures in the coming hours.
With the Scudetto on the line, both teams must rely on their staff and players to step up in the absence of their head coaches.
