Daniele De Rossi is reportedly in line for a dramatic return to the AS Roma bench, just months after his initial dismissal, according to Tuttomercatoweb. This time, however, the former midfielder could be backed by club advisor and Roma legend Claudio Ranieri, who is expected to step down from his interim managerial role at the end of the season.
De Rossi initially took over from Jose Mourinho in January 2024 but was sacked just eight months later on September 18, following a string of inconsistent results. His record during that brief stint stood at 14 wins, 9 draws, and 7 defeats, averaging 1.7 points per game.
Following his departure, Ivan Juric was brought in but failed to stabilize the team, and he too was dismissed within weeks. Ranieri then stepped in for a short-term stint that has helped steady the ship, but he has maintained that he will retire again at season’s end.
With the search for a long-term manager still ongoing, Roma’s leadership appears to be reconsidering De Rossi — this time with Ranieri providing strategic support in an advisory role, potentially giving the 40-year-old a more stable platform.
The departure of former CEO Lina Souloukou, who was heavily criticized for the decision to fire De Rossi, may also pave the way for a more favorable environment should the club legend return.
Interestingly, since his exit from Roma, De Rossi has purchased lower-division club Ostiamare, launching his own football project in January 2025 — a move that could complicate or delay a return to top-flight management.
Whether De Rossi is ready to risk another turbulent spell with his beloved hometown club remains to be seen, but his potential comeback under Ranieri’s mentorship is gaining traction as Roma plots its future beyond the 2024–25 season.
