Carlos Vela, one of Major League Soccer’s most iconic players and the face of LAFC, has officially announced his retirement from professional football after a remarkable 19-year career.
The 35-year-old Mexican star retires as LAFC’s all-time leader in appearances (152), minutes played (11,194), goals (78), and assists (59). Vela made history in 2019 when he won the MLS MVP award, setting a league record with 34 goals in a single season.
Vela will remain with the club in a new role as LAFC’s first-ever Black & Gold Ambassador. He will be honored during Noche de Carlos Vela on September 21, when LAFC hosts Real Salt Lake at BMO Stadium.
“Helping to build LAFC and winning trophies for the club is a highlight of my career,” Vela said. “This club means so much to me and my family, and I’m proud of everything we’ve accomplished together. I’m excited to begin this next chapter in L.A.”
Vela was LAFC’s first-ever signing, joining in August 2017 as a Designated Player ahead of the team’s 2018 debut season. His final match came on October 27, 2024, in a playoff clash against Vancouver at BMO Stadium.
“From the beginning, Carlos has been more than just a player—he’s been the heartbeat of LAFC,” said Co-President and GM John Thorrington. “His leadership and unforgettable moments helped shape this club. We’re thrilled he’ll continue with us in his new role.”
Vela’s achievements include four MLS All-Star selections (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022), three MLS Best XI honors, and leading LAFC to the 2022 MLS Cup and two Supporters’ Shields (2019, 2022). He also played in a record two Concacaf Champions League finals with the club (2020, 2023).
Vela is one of just 13 players in MLS history to record at least 75 goals and 50 assists, and the only one to achieve it in just six seasons. He reached 100 combined goal contributions faster than almost any player in league history, needing only 98 games.
In 2023, he had one of his busiest seasons, playing 48 matches across all competitions and contributing 14 goals and 12 assists. His 2019 MVP season, featuring 34 goals and 15 assists, remains one of the greatest in MLS history.
Born in Cancún, Mexico, Vela also had an impressive international career. He earned 72 caps and scored 19 goals for the Mexican national team, appearing in the 2010 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.
Before joining MLS, Vela played in Europe, most notably with Real Sociedad in Spain’s La Liga, where he scored 72 goals in over 200 matches. He started his professional journey with Arsenal in the English Premier League and had stints with Salamanca, Osasuna, and West Bromwich Albion. He was named Real Sociedad’s Player of the Year in both 2011-12 and 2013-14.
“Carlos’ leadership and grace on the pitch helped launch our club and shape its identity,” said LAFC Lead Managing Owner Bennett Rosenthal. “We’re proud to have him continue with LAFC and thank him for everything he has done.”
Carlos Vela’s playing days may be over, but his legacy at LAFC—and in MLS—is only growing stronger.
