Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has thanked emergency services for their quick response to the tragic incident that took place during the club’s Premier League trophy parade on Monday.
In a heartfelt letter shared at the League Managers Association (LMA) annual awards ceremony—where he was named the 2024/25 Barclays Manager of the Season—Slot expressed his sorrow and gratitude following a car attack that injured more than 50 people in Liverpool’s city centre. Eleven of the injured remain in hospital, though all are in stable condition.
Slot did not attend the LMA event out of respect for those affected.
Expressing Gratitude and Solidarity
In his letter, also published on Liverpool FC’s website, Slot said:
“A shocking incident took place in Liverpool yesterday, one that left dozens of men, women and children who had attended our parade injured. I have had to withdraw from the event out of solidarity with all affected.”
He added,
“I would like to thank the wider football community, including the LMA, Premier League, and many clubs, for the support over the last 24 hours. Football is built on rivalry, but in moments like these, it is also a community.”
Slot praised emergency workers and bystanders who helped during the crisis:
“Everyone involved in the aftermath deserves our gratitude.”
Honoured Despite Difficult Circumstances
Slot became the first Dutch manager to win the Barclays Premier League Manager of the Season award after guiding Liverpool to their second Premier League title—and their 20th English top-flight crown, equaling Manchester United’s record.
“I am humbled to receive this award,” Slot said. “It means even more to be recognised by my peers with the Sir Alex Ferguson Trophy for LMA Manager of the Year.”
He added a personal note to Sir Alex Ferguson:
“Sir Alex, I look forward to meeting you at a later date to receive my trophy. Thank you again for your support and understanding.”
Slot also asked that fans keep those affected by the parade tragedy in their thoughts and prayers.
A Remarkable First Season
Slot replaced legendary manager Jürgen Klopp and faced high expectations. Despite the pressure, he led Liverpool to an outstanding season. The team won 25 matches—more than any other club—and scored a league-high 86 goals. They finished 10 points ahead of second-place Arsenal, with the second-best defensive record in the league.
This season, Liverpool also swept the Premier League’s individual awards:
- Mohamed Salah won EA SPORTS Player of the Season
- Ryan Gravenberch won Hublot Young Player of the Season
- Arne Slot won Barclays Manager of the Season
It is only the third time a single club has claimed all three individual awards in one season, a feat previously achieved only by Manchester City in 2020/21 and 2022/23.
Slot won his award after a combined vote from fans and a panel of football experts. The shortlist included Thomas Frank, Eddie Howe, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Vitor Pereira.
