Charlotte will not host the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men’s and women’s basketball tournaments between 2027 and 2029, according to the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA).
City officials confirmed that the CIAA has chosen another location for the three-year span. One of the key reasons for Charlotte’s unsuccessful bid was a scheduling conflict with the city’s primary venues.
“When the CIAA requested 2027 dates earlier this year, our main venues were already booked with other events,” the CRVA said in a statement. “This is a sign of Charlotte’s growing status as a top host city.”
Charlotte previously hosted the tournaments from 2006 to 2020 at the Spectrum Center. The events generated millions of dollars in economic impact for the city. Before moving to Charlotte, the tournaments were held in Raleigh. Since 2021, Baltimore has been the host city.
Despite the setback, Charlotte officials remain optimistic.
“We’re hopeful that Charlotte will have the chance to welcome the tournament back in the future,” the CRVA said.
