Former world champion PV Sindhu bounced back in style at the Singapore Badminton Open 2025, securing a straight-game win on Tuesday to reach the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals.
Sindhu, currently ranked No. 17 in the world, defeated Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang, ranked 52nd, with a commanding 21-14, 21-9 victory in just 31 minutes. The two players previously met at the Spain Masters last year, where Sindhu also won in straight games.
The 2022 Singapore Open champion came into the tournament after enduring four consecutive first-round exits on this year’s BWF World Tour. Her best result so far in 2025 had been a quarter-final finish at the India Open in January.
While Sindhu progressed, other Indian players had a tougher outing.
Malvika Bansod put up a strong fight but lost to Thailand’s world No. 9 Supanida Katethong in three games: 14-21, 21-18, 21-11. Anmol Kharb also exited the tournament after a narrow defeat to Olympic gold medallist Chen Yufei of China, 21-11, 24-22.
In men’s singles, HS Prannoy staged a spirited comeback to beat Denmark’s world No. 28 Rasmus Gemke. Ranked 34th, Prannoy triumphed 19-21, 21-16, 21-14 in a match that lasted over 70 minutes.
Meanwhile, Priyanshu Rajawat started well against Japan’s Kodai Naraoka, the 2023 World Championships silver medallist, but eventually lost 14-21, 21-10, 21-14.
In mixed doubles, Paris 2024 Olympian Tanisha Crasto and partner Dhruv Kapila were knocked out by China’s Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi, 21-18, 21-13.
