Tennis icon Serena Williams has been awarded the 2025 Princess of Asturias Prize for Sports, organisers announced on Wednesday, 28 May.
The Princess of Asturias Awards are among Spain’s highest honors. They celebrate achievements across many fields, including sports, the arts, literature, and science. The awards ceremony takes place each autumn in the city of Oviedo, and is presided over by Princess Leonor of Spain.
In their announcement, organisers praised Williams as “one of the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport.” They also highlighted her work off the court, describing her as “a staunch advocate for gender equality and equal opportunities in sport and society.”
Williams is a four-time Olympic gold medallist. She retired with 23 Grand Slam titles and 73 career singles titles, making her one of the most decorated athletes in tennis history.
She joins a distinguished list of previous winners of the sports award, including Olympic champions Lindsey Vonn, Carolina Marín, Eliud Kipchoge, and the International Olympic Committee Refugee Team.
