Three members of the UCLA men’s tennis team received All-America honors on Tuesday from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Spencer Johnson (singles), Alexander Hoogmartens (doubles), and Aadarsh Tripathi (doubles) were each recognized for their impressive performances at the NCAA individual championships.
To earn ITA All-America honors in singles, players must win the ITA All-American Championship, reach the NCAA singles round of 16, or finish in the top 20 of the final ITA singles rankings. For doubles, All-America recognition is awarded to teams who win the ITA All-American Championship, make it to the NCAA doubles quarterfinals, or finish in the top 10 of the final ITA doubles rankings.
Spencer Johnson made a strong impact in his first NCAA singles appearance, reaching the quarterfinals. Along the way, he defeated ranked opponents, including No. 42 Kenta Miyoshi of Illinois, No. 33 Braden Shick of NC State, and Duncan Chan of TCU. Johnson earned his NCAA spot by winning the ITA Southwest Regional Championships singles title. He climbed to a career-high No. 12 in the ITA rankings during dual-match play and finished the season at No. 40 despite an injury-shortened campaign. Johnson ended the year with a 17-7 singles record, including a 7-5 dual match record. He also played a key role in UCLA’s 4-2 victory over USC in the NCAA Championships super-regional.
Alexander Hoogmartens and Aadarsh Tripathi teamed up for the first time to win the ITA Southwest Regional Championships doubles title, earning them a spot in the NCAA doubles tournament. They made it to the quarterfinals before an injury ended their run. Their strong 7-0 fall season performance placed them 10th in the final ITA doubles rankings. During the season, the duo also scored a ranked victory over No. 14 Ryan Colby and Thomas Paulsell of Georgia. Hoogmartens finished the year playing with senior Giacomo Revelli on the top court, while Tripathi and Johnson teamed up for an impressive 8-1 record.
