The Vineyard boys tennis team continued its impressive postseason run on Monday afternoon, delivering a 5-0 sweep over Groton-Dunstable in the state tournament’s round of 16.
Senior Zak Potter set the tone early with a flawless performance at first singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. Caleb Dubin followed with a strong 6-2, 6-0 victory, and Kurt Kleeman sealed third singles with an identical 6-2, 6-0 win.
“Physically and mentally, that might be the best tennis I’ve ever played,” Potter said after the match.
In doubles play, Tommy Flynn and Kyle Levy rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at first doubles. At second doubles, Nate Walsh and Henry Wansiewicz battled through a tight match, ultimately taking a third-set tiebreak 10-2 to complete the sweep.
Kleeman credited the team’s senior-heavy lineup as a key factor in their success. “We have a lot of talent,” he said. “With five seniors in the lineup this year, I think we have the best shot we’ve had in the past decade.”
With the win, the Vineyarders advance to the state quarterfinals, where they’ll face Cape Cod Academy at home on Wednesday. For many players, it will be their final match on the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School courts.
Head coach Nicole Macy praised her team’s preparation but reminded them not to get ahead of themselves.
“We know we put in the work, and we know we’ve got the talent,” Macy said. “But any team can be beaten on any given day.”
The quarterfinal match will take place at MVRHS on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
