France has long been a powerhouse in tennis, consistently producing skilled players who compete at the highest levels. Today, the country boasts ten players in the ATP’s top 100, with Arthur Fils leading the charge as the highest-ranked Frenchman at No. 14.
At just 21 years old, Fils is part of a new generation of French talent, joining the ranks of fellow young stars Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Hugo Gaston, Ugo Humbert, and Corentin Moutet—all under the age of 26.
Fils recently participated in a lighthearted challenge with Prime Video Sport France, where he played a fun game of choosing between tennis legends. Naturally, the “Big Three” of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic were the final contenders.
The game started with Fils picking between Stan Wawrinka and Juan Martin del Potro, and he ultimately selected Wawrinka. He continued to choose the Swiss legend over top names like Jannik Sinner and Lleyton Hewitt until facing his compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. In a patriotic move, Fils picked Tsonga, keeping him in the mix over Marat Safin and Dominic Thiem.
However, when Carlos Alcaraz entered the conversation, Fils chose the current ATP sensation. Alcaraz stayed in contention against Andy Roddick, but the real test came when the “Big Three” were mentioned.
Fils first chose Federer, and when it came down to the final choice between Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal, he stood firm. “Federer, it’s just Roger…” he said, naming Federer the greatest of all time.
Arthur Fils’ Rising Career
Arthur Fils may be young, but his career is already taking off. Born on June 12, 2004, Fils has claimed three career titles so far—Lyon in 2023, followed by Hamburg and Tokyo in 2024. His current ranking of No. 14 is the highest he has achieved to date.
What makes Fils special is his ability to perform across all surfaces. While clay remains his strongest surface, he has also proven his skills on hard courts and grass. At Wimbledon 2024, he reached the fourth round, demonstrating his adaptability on tennis’ most challenging courts.
With his impressive trajectory, Arthur Fils is undoubtedly a player to watch in the coming years as he continues to rise through the ranks of the ATP.
