Fran Kirby has announced her retirement from international football after a conversation with England manager Sarina Wiegman. The 31-year-old forward, who won 77 caps for the Lionesses, was a key figure in their victory at Euro 2022 on home soil.
Kirby, who currently plays for Brighton, enjoyed a highly successful career at Chelsea. During her time there, she won seven Women’s Super League titles, five Women’s FA Cups, and was twice named PFA Women’s Footballer of the Year.
Speaking to the BBC, Kirby shared her decision: “The plan was to retire after the Euros but after speaking to Sarina, I’m not going to make the squad,” she said. “It was like a dagger to my heart but also a weight off my shoulders all at the same time. It was emotional for both of us, but we both respected what each person was saying.”
Kirby had recently been part of the England squad for Nations League matches against Portugal and Spain. Following England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain on Tuesday, she informed her teammates of her decision to step away from international duty.
Widely regarded as one of the most talented English players of her generation, Kirby’s career has been marked by her determination to overcome major injuries and her openness about her mental health struggles.
England head coach Sarina Wiegman praised Kirby’s impact both on and off the pitch. “Incredible footballer,” Wiegman said. “Her touch, vision, positioning, game understanding, and connections were exceptional. But as a person, what she has gone through and the way she has come back every time is remarkable. She’s been an inspiration for many and an incredible example.”
Kirby’s retirement comes just days after goalkeeper Mary Earps also announced her shock decision to retire from international football. This leaves England with major changes just weeks before they aim to defend their European Championship title in Switzerland.
