Simone Inzaghi has confirmed he will leave Inter Milan following their heavy 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Champions League final. This loss marked the end of Inzaghi’s four-year tenure at the Serie A club, which included both triumphs and disappointments.
In a heartfelt message posted on Inter’s official website on Tuesday, Inzaghi said, “The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a run of four years during which I gave everything.”
The defeat to PSG on Saturday not only ended Inter’s Champions League hopes but also became the most one-sided loss in the 70-year history of major European finals.
Reports suggest that Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal is keen on securing Inzaghi’s services with an offer worth more than 20 million euros ($23 million) per season.
During his time at Inter, Inzaghi led the team to a Serie A title last year and reached the 2023 Champions League final, although they were defeated by Manchester City. Despite having one more year left on his contract, the coach has decided to move on.
As for Inter Milan’s future, it remains unclear who will take charge as the team prepares for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, starting June 14. Inter will play Monterrey on June 17, a day before Al-Hilal faces Real Madrid.
There has been speculation that former player Cesc Fabregas, who recently managed Como to a 10th-place finish in Serie A, could be a potential replacement.
Inter Milan finished second in Serie A this season, just one point behind Napoli, and had been in contention for a treble. However, they were eliminated by city rivals AC Milan in the Italian Cup semifinals in April, and lost to Milan again in the Italian Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia in January, meaning they finished the season without a major trophy.
Inzaghi’s departure marks the latest managerial change in Italy, as top clubs like Milan, Roma, and Atalanta are also undergoing coaching shifts this offseason.
