Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers has been named National League Player of the Month for May, making history as the first player in Major League Baseball to win the prestigious monthly honor in both the American League and National League.
The 30-year-old two-way star secured his second NL Player of the Month award after claiming his first last September with the Dodgers. Prior to this, Ohtani earned four AL Player of the Month accolades during his time with the Los Angeles Angels.
In May, Ohtani was a dominant force, leading all of MLB with 15 home runs. He hit two home runs in two separate games, tying his personal record and setting a new Dodgers franchise mark for most homers in a single month. Along with his home run power, Ohtani led the league with 31 runs scored and ranked second in the NL with 27 RBIs, while posting a .309 batting average.
This victory marks the sixth MLB monthly award of Ohtani’s career, further cementing his place as the most decorated Japanese player in MLB history.
In other awards, Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees was named AL Player of the Month after batting .364 with 11 home runs and 18 RBIs. On the pitching side, Robbie Ray of the San Francisco Giants won the NL Pitcher of the Month award with a 4-1 record and a 1.38 ERA, while Kris Bubic of the Kansas City Royals earned the AL Pitcher of the Month honor with a 3-0 record and an impressive 0.56 ERA.
