Anthony Wayne advanced to the Division II baseball regional final after edging out Trenton Edgewood 3-2 in a tense semifinal game Tuesday at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex.
With the game tied at 2 in the bottom of the seventh, Anthony Wayne’s Cole Biedenharn lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Eli Donawa from third base to clinch the victory.
The seventh-inning rally began with Donawa, who led off the frame with an infield single. He advanced to third on an error and then was intentionally walked, setting the stage for Biedenharn’s game-winning flyout.
Earlier in the game, Anthony Wayne took the lead in the first inning when Max Crandell’s two-out, two-run single scored Lukas Potkanowicz. The Generals made it 2-0 in the fourth inning thanks to a passed ball, but Edgewood responded in the fifth. Carter Breedlove’s RBI triple cut the lead to 2-1, and Breedlove tied the game shortly after on a dropped third strike.
Carter Johnson earned the win in relief for Anthony Wayne, striking out three and walking none while allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings of work. Carson Downie took the loss for Edgewood.
Anthony Wayne will now face Loveland, which defeated Ashville Teays Valley 13-2, in the regional final at 2 p.m. Thursday.
