Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand secured a spot in the women’s doubles pre-quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open 2025 on Wednesday, defeating Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr in straight games. The Indian pair, ranked 12th in the world, won 21-14, 22-20 in the first round.
The duo started slow, trailing 4-1 in the opening game, but quickly bounced back to take control and win the first set comfortably. The second game was more closely contested, with Treesa and Gayatri trailing 11-10 at the interval. However, they regained the lead before narrowly missing two match points. Despite the pressure, they held their nerve and clinched the win in a thrilling tie-break.
In men’s singles, world No. 37 Kiran George was defeated by former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in 32 minutes. Kiran put up a strong fight in the first game but ultimately lost 22-20, 21-9. His defeat marked the end of India’s challenge in the men’s singles category, following earlier exits by Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy.
In mixed doubles, Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath kept India’s hopes alive with a come-from-behind win over Chinese Taipei’s Ye Hong-wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan. The Indian pair won 15-21, 21-16, 21-17 to advance to the next round.
However, other Indian mixed doubles pairs suffered defeats. Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde were beaten 21-14, 21-9 by Japan’s Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara. Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh lost 21-15, 21-9 to Denmark’s Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch.
India’s top mixed doubles pair, world No. 17 Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, were also eliminated by Malaysia’s second seeds Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, losing 21-11, 16-21, 21-14.
PV Sindhu and Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy had progressed to the second round on Tuesday.
