Former Manchester City defender Richard Dunne says he isn’t surprised to see Vincent Kompany thriving as head coach of Bayern Munich, citing the Belgian’s leadership qualities and drive to improve from an early age.
Speaking to Betway, Dunne reflected on Kompany’s arrival at Manchester City and his transformation from a top player into a promising manager. “Even before he joined City, Vincent was highly rated at Anderlecht. Several clubs were already watching him,” Dunne said. “When he arrived, he had that personality of a leader—he always wanted to improve and get better. That’s the kind of mentality you see in players who go on to become great managers.”
Kompany signed with Manchester City before the club’s rise to global prominence. Dunne noted that although few could have predicted the extent of Kompany’s success at the time, his growth mirrored the club’s own development. “He had the talent and the work ethic to keep up as the team improved year after year. In the end, he became one of the Premier League’s best center-backs,” Dunne said.
Kompany’s move into management seemed like a natural next step, Dunne added. “He’s done really well so far. Just look at how Bayern played in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen—they looked dominant. That’s a real compliment to Kompany, especially going up against someone as highly regarded as Xabi Alonso.”
After a strong first season at Bayern Munich, expectations for Kompany are set to rise. The question now is whether he can help the team take another step forward in performance.
