Jokic’s impressive performance throughout the regular season earned him the prestigious honor over notable contenders Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.
Jokic garnered 79 first-place votes from a panel of broadcasters and journalists, solidifying his status as one of the league’s elite players. The Serbian big man joins an illustrious group of players, becoming just the ninth player in NBA history to win the MVP award three or more times. His previous MVP titles were earned in 2021 and 2022.
During the 2023-24 regular season, Jokic showcased exceptional all-around skills, averaging 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 9.0 assists across 79 games. His statistical performance was remarkable, as he became only the second player ever to achieve at least 2,000 points, 900 rebounds, and 700 assists in a single season, following the legendary Oscar Robertson’s feat in 1961-62.
Jokic’s MVP win continues a trend of international players making their mark in the NBA. Over the past six years, every MVP recipient has hailed from outside North America. Cameroonian center Joel Embiid claimed the title last year, while Greek forward Giannis Antetokounmpo secured MVP honors in 2020 and 2019, underscoring the global talent and impact within the league.
